Wesleyan Athletics Honors Student-Athletes at Year-End Banquet

The Wesleyan College athletics department recognized its student-athletes for their participation in the 2010-2011 school year at its year-end banquet last weekend.

The department's biggest award of the night, the Athlete of the Year Award, went to senior Emily Epperson.  A member of the soccer, cross country and softball teams, she proved to be the heart and soul of her teams as well as a consistent leader no matter which field she attacked.  Epperson, who was a four-year starter at goalie for the Pioneer soccer team, graduates from Wesleyan College as the NCAA's all divisions all-time leader in career saves, tallying 1,127 saves.

Wesleyan's Multi-Sport Athlete of the Year was awarded to Kaitlyn Rentz, who ran cross country in addition to being a member of the equestrian team.  Known for her great attitude, encouragement of teammates and impeccable work ethic, the junior from Quincy, Fla., consistently improved her times over the course of the cross country season and has qualified for nationals in the equestrian ring.
Anna Plue received the Scholar Athlete of the Year award for holding the highest grade point average of any Pioneer student-athlete. The junior from Augusta, Ga., maintains a 4.0 GPA while participating on Wesleyan's volleyball and equestrian teams.

The department's Pioneer Spirit Award was given to freshman DiAsia Rogers.  A member of the basketball and softball teams, the Savannah native is known on campus for her sense of humor, her positive attitude, and her encouraging words to teammates throughout the course of competition.  In addition to the Pioneer Spirit Award, Rogers was also recognized as the Most Improved Player for both the basketball and softball teams.

The team earning the Highest Team GPA Award for the 2010-11 school year was the cross country team.  The runners managed to combine for an impressive 3.45 overall GPA.
