Six Pioneers Earn Softball All-Academic Accolades

Six Wesleyan College softball players earned All-Academic accolades by the Great South Athletic Conference.

Maddie Allsup, Lindsey Ambegia, Dalin Gillis, Lacie King, Dena Phillips and Cheyanne Siebenaler received the recognition.

Only Piedmont College placed more student-athletes on the list among the seven GSAC institutions.

Siebenaler Picks Up Two Hits in Season Finale

LaGRANGE, Ga. - Cheyenne Siebenaler went 2-for-3 in Wesleyan College's 8-0 loss to Huntingdon College at the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament.

With the loss, the Pioneers closed their season while the Hawks advanced in the loser's bracket of the championship.

Third-seeded Huntingdon (16-21-1) scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to break open the game. Kayla Bratcher squelched any attempt at a Wesleyan (5-26) upset, allowing only four hits in the complete game victory.

Belle Thomas and Brittany Jones each added a hit for the Pioneers and both ended the tournament with a team-best .400 batting average for the two games.

Offensive Struggles Plague Wesleyan in GSAC Opener

LaGrange, Ga. - Fifth-seeded Wesleyan College managed just two hits in an 8-0 loss to fourth-seeded Piedmont College in the opening game of the Great South Athletic Conference softball championship.

Despite the offensive struggles, the Pioneers (5-25) were still in the game heading into the final innings. After surrendering single runs in the first two frames, Wesleyan responded in the fourth inning. The Pioneers' leading hitter, Belle Thomas opened the inning with an infield single and Brittany Jones followed with a shot back up the middle. After Lacie King executed a successful sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, DaLin Gillis picked up an RBI groundout to score Thomas. However, the Pioneers would strand Jones and leave the inning trailing by a run.

Piedmont would answer in their half of the inning as Emily Cheek led-off the frame with a solo homer. The Lions went on to score six unanswered runs to drop Wesleyan into the loser's bracket.

The Pioneers will attempt to stay alive at the championship tomorrow when they face the loser of tonight's fifth game of the schedule.

Wesleyan To Take on Piedmont In Opening Round of GSAC Softball Championship

The Wesleyan College softball team enters this weekend's Great South Athletic Conference Softball Championship ranked fifth and will take on the fourth seeded Piedmont Lions.

Wesleyan is coming off a sweep of GSAC rival Agnes Scott on Tuesday, where in two games, the Pioneers combined for 36 hits, only four strike outs and one error. An offense that has at times been stagnant found its rhythm, racking up six doubles to go along with a two-run home run by sophomore Belle Thomas.

The Pioneers (5-24, 4-8 GSAC) are hoping to maintain their offensive dominance as they head into this weekend's GSAC Championship, which is being hosted by LaGrange College and runs from April 24-26. They will take on a Piedmont (12-14, 6-6 GSAC) team who was runner-up in the 2008 GSAC Softball Championship but has since had some trouble adjusting to the losses of several valuable players since last season.

In their only meeting this season, Piedmont swept a doubleheader from the Pioneers that was played in Demorest, Ga. The Lions won 7-1 and 7-2, pounding out 20 hits to Wesleyan's 15. Although they were able to put the bat on the ball, the Pioneers could not find a way to push runs across the plate and had six critical errors that put the games out of reach.

Wesleyan will be looking to senior DaLin Gillis to set the tone for the Pioneers this weekend both at the plate and from the mound. Offensively, Gillis leads the team with a 0.302 batting average and is second in hits (26) and RBIs (11). On the mound, she has an ERA of 3.65, which is sixth among GSAC pitchers.

The Wesleyan vs. Piedmont matchup is the opening game of the 2009 Championship beginning Friday morning at 9:00am. Should the Pioneers win that game, they would take on #1 LaGrange at 3:30pm. If they lose to Piedmont in the first game, they would then play at 10:00am on Saturday morning.

Wesleyan Softball Falls to Huntingdon

Making up games that were rained out earlier this season, the Wesleyan softball team travelled to Montgomery, Ala. to take on Huntingdon College in more Great South Athletic Conference action. The Pioneers lost both games of the doubleheader, 7-0 and 8-1, dropping them to 3-24 overall and 2-8 in GSAC play.

Wesleyan struggled to get the bats going in the first game of the day, generating only four hits in a 7-0 loss. Sophomore reserve Dena Phillips led the Pioneers offensively, going 2-for-3 from the plate, raising her batting average to 0.259.

In the day's second game, Wesleyan made five defensive errors that allowed eight Huntingdon runs in an 8-1 loss. Dena Phillips once again went 2-for-3 from the plate, leading the Pioneer offense that picked up seven hits for the game. Huntingdon senior Autumn Trimback paced the Hawk offense, going 3-for-3 with a triple and 3 RBIs.

The Pioneers will travel to Decatur, Ga. tomorrow to wrap up conference play, taking on Agnes Scott College in a doubleheader that will begin at 5:00pm.

Wesleyan Softball Drops Two to League-Leading LaGrange

The Wesleyan College softball team faced off with GSAC leader LaGrange College on Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader, 2-1 and 9-0.

In the day's first game, Wesleyan kept the game close throughout but could not overcome four errors on defense, losing 2-1. Cheyanne Siebenaler gave up only six hits in her outing, but Wesleyan could not find an offensive rhythm and was only able to generate four hits of their own. Senior shortstop Lacie King went 2-for-3 from the plate, pacing the Pioneer offense.

Sophomore pitcher Kristen Woodard pitched a one-hitter in the second game of the day to give LaGrange a shutout victory, 9-0. Junior Jennifer Knight hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, one of the Panthers nine hits for the game.

The Pioneers will travel to Huntingdon College on Monday, April 20 to play another GSAC doubleheader beginning at 2:00pm.

Pioneer Softball Wins Two vs. Spelman, Drops Two vs. Piedmont

In Great South Athletic Conference action over this past week, the Wesleyan College softball team picked up their first conference wins of the season over Spelman College and dropped both games of a doubleheader to Piedmont College.

In last evening's action at Piedmont, Wesleyan was able to generate only six hits by six different batters in the first game, losing to the Lions 7-1. Piedmont's senior pitcher Lindsey Drevlow led the way for the Lions going 1-for-3 from the plate with a double and three RBIs to add to her five strikeouts and one walk over seven innings from the mound.

Although the Pioneers were able to put the ball in play with more consistency in game two, four errors and eight runners left on base proved too much to overcome in their 7-2 loss. Sophomore Belle Thomas (3-for-4 with one run scored) and junior Cheyanne Siebenaler (2-for-2) led Wesleyan from the plate, while DaLin Gillis pitched six innings, surrendering 12 hits and striking out four batters.

In games played last Thursday at Spelman, the Pioneers picked up their first two Great South Athletic Conference wins of the season, downing the Jaguars 15-5 and 12-4. These wins helped move the Pioneers into fifth place in the GSAC standings.

The first game of the day saw the Pioneers pick up their win in quick fashion, scoring 15 runs on 10 hits in only five innings. Sophomore catcher Ashley Jackson had one of her most productive games from the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Belle Thomas and Cheyanne Siebenaler each recorded two hits and an RBI as well. The lone highlight for Spelman's offense was freshman Arianna Crosby, who finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs.

The second victory of the day did not come quite as easily for the Pioneers who were held scoreless until the fourth inning of game two. However, over the final four innings, Wesleyan scored 12 runs on 13 hits to defeat the Jaguars 12-4. Belle Thomas gave the Pioneers the biggest lift of the day, hitting a grand slam home run in the seventh inning to push the game out of reach for the Jaguars.

DaLin Gillis carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up three hits for the game. Her perfomance dropped her ERA to 3.45, which puts her into a tie for third in the Great South Athletic Conference.

Wesleyan returns to the field for another Great South Athletic Conference matchup at LaGrange College on Saturday, April 18. The first pitch of the doubleheader is at 2:00pm.

LAGRANGE RALLIES TO SLIP PAST WESLEYAN

A two-out rally in the seventh inning helped visiting LaGrange College complete the sweep of Wesleyan College in a Great South Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Mathews Athletic Complex.

Leadoff hitter Katie Ison blasted a line drive shot over the centerfield fence to highlight LaGrange's 4-0 victory in game one. The Panthers (7-15, 3-1 GSAC) scored in each of the first two innings while Katie Hein and Kristen Woodard combined to limit the Pioneers to just four hits in the shutout. DaLin Gillis managed a pair of hits in the loss.

Game two featured more drama. Brittany Jones, DaLin Gillis and Ashley Jackson put together three straight two-out hits to score twice in the third inning for Wesleyan (1-18, 0-4 GSAC). Gillis held LaGrange at bay until the sixth inning as the Panthers took advantage of an error and a passed ball to eventually cut the lead in half. In their next at-bat, LaGrange made the most of another Pioneer error as Katie Hein drove in the game-tying run with two outs on the board. The momentum followed the Panthers into extra innings as Kristi Underwood's fielder's choice would plate Hein with the game-winning run.

Gillis would toss her ninth complete game of the season and allowed only one earned run to watch her ERA fall to 3.50 which ranks in the GSAC's top five.

Wesleyan continues GSAC play on Sunday when they travel to Huntingdon for a 1:00pm CT doubleheader.

BECKHAM’S BLAST DOWNS WESLEYAN IN DOUBLEHEADER

An extra innings loss capped a disappointing Great South Athletic Conference opener as Wesleyan College dropped both ends of a double header to league leading Maryville College on Monday night.

In the opener, Maryville (10-12, 3-1 GSAC) took advantage of a crucial Wesleyan error after Chastity Smith and Alana Von Hoy put together back-to-back RBI singles in a three-run second inning. The Scots would extend the lead to seven runs as they cruised to a 7-1 victory in game one. The loss spoiled a 3-for-3 effort from leadoff hitter Belle Thomas for the Pioneers (1-16, 0-2 GSAC).

Katie Beckham’s home run in the eighth inning ended the Pioneers hope of an upset, falling in game two, 3-1. The Pioneers and the Scots traded runs in the first inning. Thomas sparked the Wesleyan offense, taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch and sacrifice fly by DaLin Gillis to score. A pitcher’s duel ensued for the remainder of the game with Sarah Reeder limiting Wesleyan to just two more hits and Cheyenne Siebenaler allowing 10 hits over the course of the game before falling victim to Beckham’s blast.

“I’m really proud of our girl’s effort today,” stated Wesleyan Head Coach Shannon Fevella. “I was pleased at how we bounced back from the loss in the first game to take them to extra innings in the second. Maryville is the best we’re going to see and we played with them, so it hurts to lose in extra innings, but it’s also promising because we are showing significant improvement.”

The Pioneers return to the field on Wednesday, April 1 when they travel to Piedmont College to make up a doubleheader that was postponed last week due to inclement weather. First pitch is at 5:00pm.

WESLEYAN SOFTBALL PICKS UP FIRST WIN OF SEASON

The Pioneers of Wesleyan College picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Southern Wesleyan University 3-2 in 10 innings. Wesleyan lost the second game of the doubleheader 4-0.

In the day’s first game, senior pitcher DaLin Gillis carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning for the Pioneers (1-14) before giving up her first hit of the game to freshman pinch hitter Christy Hudson. Hudson’s single allowed the Lady Warriors to score the first run of the game, but Wesleyan would answer at the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Gillis that scored Brittany Jones.

In the tenth inning, Southern Wesleyan (9-15) had runners on second and third with only one out, but the Pioneers defense was able to hold the runners and get out of the inning without allowing the Lady Warriors to score. Southern Wesleyan pitcher Teann Pilgrim began the bottom of the tenth inning with a strikeout, but the Pioneer offense would respond in their very next at bat. Sophomore Belle Thomas singled to right field, which allowed senior Maddie Allsup, who was placed at second base at the beginning of the inning, to score the game’s winning run.

Gillis finished the game with eight strikeouts, while allowing only three hits and walking two.

“I’m extremely proud of our girls for their effort today,” stated Wesleyan Head Coach Shannon Fevella. “DaLin played great giving us the no-hitter through seven innings, and we were able to dig deep and pull out the win.”

In the second game, Southern Wesleyan’s Breanna McMillan scored a run in the second inning to give the Lady Warriors an early lead that they would maintain throughout the game. They would add three more runs during the seventh inning to put the Pioneers away for good. Wesleyan was able to generate only five hits during the game and once again struggled to find their rhythm on offense.

The Pioneers return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 25, when they travel to Piedmont College to begin Great South Athletic Conference action in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00pm.

Wesleyan Softball Returns to the Diamond Against Southern Wesleyan

After a lay-off of nearly two weeks, the Wesleyan College (0-13) softball team returns to action on Wednesday when they face off with the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University (8-14).

In a doubleheader played earlier this season, Wesleyan lost to Southern Wesleyan 5-4 and 6-2. The Pioneers had opportunities to pull out a victory in both games but came up a little short; however, Wesleyan finished the day with a total of 16 hits and found an offensive rhythm that had been missing prior to those games.

The Warriors are led offensively by senior second baseman Lauren Angel, who is pacing Southern Wesleyan with a 0.390 batting average and 16 hits. From the mound, junior Breanna McMillan has taken control with a 1.33 ERA and 31 strikeouts over the course of seven games.

The Pioneers will look to junior pitcher Cheyanne Siebenaler to give them a lift both from the mound and at the plate. Siebenaler leads Wesleyan with a 0.300 batting average and has accumulated nine hits over the course of the season.

First pitch is at 4:00pm at the Mathews Athletic Complex and admission is free.

Johnson remained consistent with another 2nd place ribbon in the Walk/Trot, while senior Amanda Dotson placed 5th in the Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter.

WESLEYAN UPSET BID FALLS SHORT at AGNES SCOTT

Wesleyan College held the lead late in the first half before second-seeded Agnes Scott College pulled away after halftime in a 53-39 loss in the first round of the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Pioneers trailed by just a point at the intermission in large part because of a seven point advantage held by the Scotties at the foul line. Wesleyan (5-19) saw their offense abandon them in the second half, scoring just 12 points.

Kassie Epps scored a team-best nine points in the loss while Bre' Solomon added eight rebounds and three blocks for Wesleyan. Morgan Smith scored 23 points to pace Agnes Scott.

Wesleyan's five wins exceeded the program's win total from the previous four seasons combined.

GILLIS FANS 16 AS WESLEYAN SWEEPS ANDREW COLLEGE

The Wesleyan College softball team picked up two more wins over Andrew College on Tuesday evening, defeating the Lady Tigers 5-3 and 3-1. The Pioneers rediscovered their offensive rhythm, picking up a combined 17 hits over the course of the two games.

In the day’s first game, Wesleyan jumped on the Lady Tigers early when sophomore Ashley Jackson hit a three-run homerun over the center field wall in the first inning. However, Andrew tied the score at three in the third inning, with hits by Kayla Lumley, Brittany Ellington and Brandie Monroe. The game remained tied until a single by Lacie King in the fifth inning scored Jackson once again and allowed the Pioneers to regain the lead for good. Wesleyan tacked on an extra run in the sixth inning to solidify the win and give freshman Brittany Jones her first collegiate win. Jones pitched a complete game, striking out nine while surrendering only three hits.

The Pioneers continued their winning ways in game two on the heels of senior pitcher DaLin Gillis, who struck out 16 batters while allowing only four hits. Offensively, the Pioneers picked up eight hits in game two paced by Denise Ramey (3-for-4, RBI), Lacie King (2-for-3) and Cheyanne Siebenaler (1-for-2, 2B).

The Pioneers wrap up their home-stand on Friday, March 6, taking on Millsaps College in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00pm.

Wesleyan Softball Looking To Return To Winning Ways vs. Andrew College

Having already swept Andrew College once this season, the Wesleyan College softball team is looking to get back on the winning track when they face off against the Lady Tigers tomorrow evening.

In the season opener played in Cuthbert, Ga., the Pioneers gave a dominant performance both at the plate and in the field, winning the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 8-0 after the run rule was inforced in the fifth inning. DaLin Gillis led the defense from the mound, striking out six, while only surrendering two hits and one walk. Offensively, the Pioneers racked up 11 hits, which has been the missing ingredient in games played more recently.

Game two was a back-and-forth battle, but Wesleyan proved to be resilient and refused to lose, picking up their second win of the day, 7-6 in nine innings. The Pioneers added another 10 hits to the day's offensive totals, and Cheyanne Siebenaler picked up her first win of the season.

The first pitch of doubleheader action is scheduled for 5:00pm at the Mathews Athletic Complex on the campus of Wesleyan College. Admission is free.

WESLEYAN BASKETBALL CLOSES REGULAR SEASON at PORTER GYM

Wesleyan College put the finishing touches on the 2008-09 regular season with a 65-35 loss to Maryville College in Great South Athletic Conference competition on Sunday afternoon.

Rachel Hornbustel's putback in the game's opening minutes gave the Pioneers (5-18, 0-12 GSAC) their only lead of the game at 4-2. The Lady Scots (17-8, 12-0) scored the next 13 points of the game to take control of the contest.

Jazzmine Favors finished with a team-high 13 points to run her double figure scoring streak to four games and five of her last six outings. Kevi Martin, the GSAC's top shot blocker, added four more rejections to go with six points and seven rebounds. Alexis Rouvelas scored a game-high 15 points off the bench for Maryville.

The seventh-seeded Pioneers will play at second-seeded Agnes Scott College on Tuesday at 7:00pm in the first round of the Great South Athletic Conference basketball tournament.

RHODES COLLEGE SWEEPS WESLEYAN SOFTBALL

The Wesleyan College softball team continued their home-stand today against Rhodes College, losing both games of the doubleheader to the Lynx who were seeing their first action of the season.

Offensive inconsistency continued to plague the Pioneers (0-11) in the first game of the day. Wesleyan was once again able to generate only three hits in their 6-0 loss against the Lynx (2-0). DaLin Gillis was the lone Pioneer to successfully put the ball in play, finishing the game with two singles on 2-for-2 hitting. The Lynx showed no signs of off-season rust in their season opener, tallying 10 hits, which were highlighted by Armanda Venezia’s two-run home run over the center field wall.

In the evening’s second game, the Pioneers had a better outing at the plate, but four errors in the field contributed to their 7-1 loss. Wesleyan picked up six hits and scored their only run when Cheyanne Siebenaler’s single brought Lacie King across the plate. The Lynx once again gave an impressive offensive performance, adding another nine hits to their season total.

The Pioneers continue their home-stand on Tuesday, February 24, taking on Andrew College in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00pm.

Pioneers Return to Field Against Rhodes College

The Wesleyan College softball team will take to the field again on Friday afternoon when they face off against Rhodes College out of Memphis, Tenn and the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Pioneers (0-9) are looking to bounce back after a pair of tough 4-0 losses to Georgia Southwestern earlier in the week, while the Lynx (0-0) will be seeing their first action of the season.

Rhodes returns eight players from last season's 13-19 team, while adding six freshman players in the off season. Catcher Rebekah Moore, third baseman Jennifer Whatley and pitcher Sara Bowen were all named to last year's All-SCAC team and will anchor the Lynx infield once again this season.

Wesleyan will look to Belle Thomas, Denise Ramey and DaLin Gillis to help the Pioneers find an offensive rhythm early, while Gillis and Cheyanne Siebenaler will anchor the defense from the pitching mound.

The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00pm.

FAVORS POSTS DOUBLE-DOUBLE in LOSS

Jazzmine Flavors continued her inspired play, posting her second straight double-double in Wesleyan College's 79-38 loss at Piedmont College in Great South Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.

Favors, a native of Powder Springs, Ga., scored 10 points and grabbed 10 boards and is averaging 11.2 points per game over her last five contests.

The game started well enough for the Pioneers (5-18, 0-11 GSAC) who held a 10-7 lead after Bre' Solomon drained a jumper just over seven minutes into play. However, that was the end of the good news for Wesleyan as Piedmont (9-14, 7-4 GSAC) outscored the Pioneers 35-7 to close the first half.

Brandy McDowell added nine points while Solomon finished with eight. Courtney Odum scored 18 points to pace five Lions in double figure scoring.

Wesleyan closes the regular season on Sunday when they host league-leader Maryville College in a game postponed earlier in the year. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00pm at Porter Gymnasium and admission is free.

WESLEYAN SOFTBALL FALLS TO GEORGIA SOUTHWESTERN

The Wesleyan College softball team struggled to find an offensive rhythm in their doubleheader against Georgia Southwestern, dropping both games by an identical score of 4-0.

In the first game of the day, Wesleyan (0-9) played even with the Lady Canes until two costly errors in the sixth inning led to all four of Georgia Southwestern’s runs. DaLin Gillis faced only 18 batters through five innings, making quick work of a shaky Georgia Southwestern (4-4) offense before the Pioneers defense faltered. Furthermore, the Pioneers struggled at the plate, as they were only able to generate three hits in the game, all coming in the first two innings of play.

Game two saw Georgia Southwestern heat up offensively, while the Pioneers once again had difficulty finding a groove at the plate. The Lady Canes picked up two doubles by Katie Wooten and Heather Chambers that drove in all four of their runs, while sibling pitchers Brittany and Tiffany Milstid combined for 10 strikeouts. Wesleyan again was only able to connect for two hits, while untimely errors resulted in more of Georgia Southwestern’s runs scored.

“We played really well for the most part tonight, but we had that one crucial breakdown in both games that really hurt us,” said Wesleyan College head coach Shannon Fevella. “We just played a very good Division II team that plays in a really tough and well respected conference, and we hung tough with them. I told our girls to take the good out of what we did tonight and move forward without hanging our heads about this loss.”

The Pioneers return to the field this Friday when they take on Rhodes College in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00pm at the Mathews Athletic Complex on the campus of Wesleyan College.

Second Half Lead Evaporates for Wesleyan

For the first thirty minutes of the game, Wesleyan College looked like the better team in nearly every aspect, but a late second half surge by Agnes Scott College overtook the Pioneers in a 55-46 defeat at Porter Gymnasium.

In a preview of a probable first-round match-up at the upcoming Great South Athletic Conference Tournament, Wesleyan looked confident and well prepared. The first half featured 12 lead changes and seven ties between the two teams. Erinn Williams converted an old-fashioned three-point play to cap a 9-2 run, giving the Pioneers (5-17, 0-10 GSAC) their largest lead of the night at 17-11. The Scotties (12-9, 8-3 GSAC) scored the next seven points of the game to re-take the lead and neither team would enjoy an advantage of more than a basket until late in the second half. A jumper by Kevi Martin put Wesleyan up by a 32-30 margin heading into the intermission.

The back-and-forth competition continued in the second half until Kimberly Reeves sparked a 18-2 run by the Scotties. Reeves scored eight points during the run while teammate Am'Asa Baldwin reeled off seven straight points of her own, including a basket that left Wesleyan trailing 51-39 with less than seven minutes to play. The Pioneers managed to close within six points late in the game on another Martin field goal but could not cut the lead any further.

Williams and Shmyra Hopkins each chipped in 10 points and combined for 11 rebounds as Wesleyan's reserves outscored Agnes Scott's 20-5 on the night. Jazzmine Favors netted double figure points for the third time in four games with 11 points. Reeves finished with 15 points and 14 boards to pace the Scotties.

Wesleyan returns to action on Wednesday at Piedmont College.

NOTES: Wesleyan's postponed home game with Maryville College has been rescheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:00pm.

Wesleyan to Play Softball Home Opener vs. Georgia Southwestern

The Wesleyan softball team will play its home opener tomorrow, February 17, against Division II opponent Georgia Southwestern.

The Pioneers (0-7) have already faced the Lady 'Canes (2-4) once this season, falling 8-0 in a tournament game played on February 6. In that match-up, Wesleyan struggled at the plate, generating only two hits throughout the game. However in their last outing against Southern Wesleyan, the Pioneers generated 17 hits over the course of the doubleheader, highlighted by an Ashley Jackson home run.

Georgia Southwestern is paced by senior catcher Heather Chambers, who is averaging an impressive .438 at the plate, which has accounted for a quarter of the team's offensive production thus far this season. The Pioneers are led by Lindsey Ambegia, who is hitting .353 with two doubles.

First pitch is at 5:00pm at the Mathews Athletic Complex.

Late Inning Rallies Lift Southern Wesleyan Past the Pioneers

The Pioneer softball team dropped two hard-fought games to NAIA foe Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday, losing 5-4 and 6-2.

In the first game of the day, the Pioneers dug themselves into an early 4-0 hole before their offense sparked a four-run sixth inning rally to tie the game behind the bats of Lacie King, Ashley Jackson and Cheyanne Siebenaler. Wesleyan's defense looked poised to hold the Warriors scoreless in the seventh inning, but a dropped ball that would have led to the third out of the inning allowed Southern Wesleyan to score the winning run. Although it took some time for the Pioneers to find their offense, Wesleyan finished the game with 11 hits.

In game two, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 2-1 lead, but a two-run homerun by Southern Wesleyan's Ashley Leford put the Warriors ahead for good in the fourth inning. The Pioneer's 6-2 loss was highlighted, however, by the first collegiate home run by sophomore Ashley Jackson.

The Pioneers return to action in their home opener at the Mathews Athletic Complex on Tuesday, February 17 with a double-header beginning at 5:00pm. Admission is free.

WESLEYAN EXTENDS NON-CONFERENCE WIN STREAK to THREE in ROUT

Jazzmine Favors scored a career-high 16 points while ripping down 12 rebounds as Wesleyan routed Warren Wilson 60-33 on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Pioneers (5-16) extended their non-conference win streak to three straight games and eclipsed the program's win total from the last four years combined. Wesleyan limited Warren Wilson to just 17% shooting for the game and did not surrender a three-pointer in the entire contest. The 27-point margin of victory is the largest for Wesleyan since the Pioneers trounced Atlanta Christian College 85-24 on December 2, 2003.

Wesleyan scored the first six points of the game but Georgia Anton scored the game's next three points to make it a one possession game. However, the Pioneers answered with six more points to push their lead out to seven and never looked back.

Favors posted her first double-double to lead the Pioneers. Brandi McDowell added 13 points while the Great South Athletic Conference's leading rebounder, Bre' Solomon, continued her great work on the boards, tracking down a game-high 14 rebounds to go with 12 points. Anton finished with 13 points to pace the Lady Owls.

The Pioneers close out their 2008-09 home schedule on Monday when they host GSAC rival Agnes Scott. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm at Porter Gymnasium and admission is free.

WESLEYAN BASKETBALL PUTS TWO-GAME NON-CONFERENCE WIN STREAK ON LINE

Wesleyan College puts their two-game non-conference winning streak on the line when they host Warren Wilson College on Saturday afternoon.

With a win, the Pioneers (4-16) would pick up their fifth victory of the season which would eclipse their win total from the last four years combined. Leading scorer Kassandra Epps has been limited to just two minutes in the last two games due to a leg injury, but the Great South Athletic Conference's top rebounder Bre' Solomon has been helping to fill the void.

The Lady Owls (3-8) are a member of the USCAA Division II and enter the game with a four-game losing streak.

Both teams hold wins over Johnson Bible College and Piedmont Baptist College this season while both have dropped games to Toccoa Falls College and Atlanta Christian College over the course of the year.

Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00pm at Porter Gymnasium and admission is free.

LEAD SLIPS AWAY FROM WESLEYAN

Wesleyan College grabbed a first half lead but saw it slip away midway through the second half in its 69-50 loss to LaGrange College in Great South Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night. Wesleyan added 13 more blocks to their GSAC leading total, including six for Kevi Martin and five Shmyra Hopkins.

A familiar script seemed to be playing out early in the game as the Panthers (13-7, 6-4 GSAC) took advantage of a slow start by the Pioneers to lead 11-2 just over five minutes into the game. Bre' Solomon loosened up Wesleyan by draining a three-pointer and the Pioneers played some of their best basketball of the season in the remainder of the first half. Solomon capped an impressive rally with a put-back bucket that gave the Pioneers (4-16, 0-9 GSAC) a 26-24 advantage with 1:20 left in the opening half. LaGrange responded by scoring the final five points of the half including a three-pointer by Heather Tidwell at the buzzer to carry a 29-26 lead into the intermission.

Twice in the second half Wesleyan managed to knot the score with the last coming at the 16:52 mark on another basket by Solomon. However, the pace of play caught up with the Pioneers in the second half, playing their second straight game without leading scorer Kassandra Epps. The Panthers answered Solomon's score with a 14-2 run that pushed the lead out to double figures and put the game away.

Rachel Hornbostel finished with 14 points while Bre' Solomon continue to dominate the boards with 11 rebounds to go with 13 points. Valeree Williams posted a game-high 19 points to pace LaGrange.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday when they host Warren Wilson. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00pm at Porter Gymnasium.

SHORT-HANDED PIONEERS FALL at SPELMAN

Bre' Solomon posted her seventh double-double of the season including a career-high 22 points in Wesleyan College's 74-60 loss at Spelman College on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (4-15, 0-8 GSAC) lost leading scorer Kassandra Epps to injury just two minutes into the game and saw the Jaguars lead by as many as 14 points in the opening period. Solomon scored six of her points to help lead Wesleyan on a 17-4 run mid-way through the first half to get back into the game. Shmyra Hopkins made a basket with 3:33 remaining to draw the Pioneers within one point. They would trail by less than a basket until Shanda Kennedy hit a three-pointer for Spelman (5-16, 2-8 GSAC) in the closing seconds for a 36-31 advantage at halftime.

Jazzmine Favors completed the Weselyan rally when she drained a shot with 17:31 left in the game to tie the score at 38-38. However, Spelman answered with an Ashley Convington three-pointer on the next possession to regain the lead. The Jaguars wore down the Pioneers late in the game, stretching the lead out to double figures before settling for the 74-60 victory.

"We ended up only playing with six players after Kassie's injury," stated head coach Jason Henry. "We just ran out of gas at the end, but I'm proud of the way we competed today."

In addition to Solomon's big day, Favors finished with a career-high 15 points, her third double figure scoring effort in the last seven games. Brandi McDowell also added 10 points in the loss. Shanda Kennedy scored a game-high 23 points to lead three Jaguars in double figure scoring.

Wesleyan continues Great South Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when they host LaGrange College. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00pm at Porter Gymnasium and admission is free.

WESLEYAN SOFTBALL SWEEPS ANDREW COLLEGE FOR FIRST WINS OF SEASON

In their season opening doubleheader, the Wesleyan College softball team swept Andrew College, invoking the run rule in an 8-0 win and pulling out a 7-6 win in nine innings.

In the first game of the day, Wesleyan senior DaLin Gillis (1-0) made quick work of the Lady Tigers, pitching a two-hitter over five innings to get the team’s first win of the season. In addition to her six strikeouts on the mound, Gillis helped herself out offensively by picking up three of Wesleyan’s 10 hits for the game. Also leading the Pioneers’ offensive explosion was sophomore Belle Thomas, who went 3-for-4 from the plate and set the tone early by leading off the game with a double.

In the nightcap, Andrew College began to find its offensive rhythm, but Wesleyan’s persistence at the plate paid off after nine hard-fought innings. After the seventh inning, the game was tied at five runs a piece and both teams scored a run in the eighth inning using the international tie-breaker rule.

To start the ninth inning, senior shortstop Lacie King reached base on a Lady Tiger error. Freshman Brittany Jones was then able to move King to second on a sacrifice, and junior Lindsey Ambegia’s game-winning RBI allowed King to cross the plate to lift the Pioneers to their second victory of the day.

Junior Cheyanne Siebenaler (1-0) picked up the win for the Pioneers, throwing a three-hitter while striking out four. Gillis once again led the Pioneers offensively, going 3-for-5 from the plate with 2 RBIs, one of which tied the game to send it into extra innings.

Following a season in which the Pioneers won only five games, these victories proved to not only boost the young team’s confidence but also to set the tone for the season from the start.

“I could not be prouder of our girls,” stated first year Wesleyan head coach Shannon Fevella. “We were all over the spectrum as far as how we won our games, but we proved a lot to ourselves this afternoon and are really excited for what’s in store for our team this season.”

Wesleyan returns to action next Friday and Saturday, February 6-7, when they play in the Georgia Southwestern Tournament in Americus, Ga. The Pioneers will play Armstrong Atlantic and Georgia Southwestern Friday evening.

SLOW START DERAILS WESLEYAN BASKETBALL at AGNES SCOTT

Despite playing even with Agnes Scott College in the second half, another first half lapse derailed Wesleyan College in their 73-48 loss in Great South Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (4-13, 0-5 GSAC) trailed just 7-6 after a Brandy McDowell bucket five minutes into the game, but the second place Scotties (8-8, 5-2 GSAC) responded by picking up the tempo. Nikki Maples scored six of her game-high 19 points to spark a 21-4 run by the Scotties that put the game out of reach.

McDowell finished with 14 points and three steals while Kassandra Epps added 13 points and five rebounds for the Pioneers. Maples dished out nine assists to go with her 19 points, leading three Scotties in double figures.

Wesleyan continues their GSAC tour against league-leader Maryville on Monday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00pm at Porter Gym and admission is free.

WESLEYAN SOFTBALL KICKS OFF 2009 SEASON

The Wesleyan College softball team will begin its 2009 campaign this Saturday when they travel to Andrew College for a doubleheader. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.

The Pioneers will be led this season by the Great South Athletic Conference’s reigning Freshman of the Year, centerfielder Belle Thomas, as well as pitchers DaLin Gillis and Cheyanne Siebenaler. Thomas led the team last year in batting average, on base percentage and stolen bases and was ranked among the top five in the GSAC in nine different statistical categories. Gillis, one of three seniors on the team, and Siebenaler will share the pitching duties for the Pioneers and are looking to set the pace for this year’s team from the mound.

In addition to these key returning players, the Pioneers are excited about the new talent that will be joining the team this season. There are high expectations for the incoming players to contribute immediately, and Wesleyan will be looking to transfer Denise Ramey to help them out with her raw athletic ability and great speed. Ramey will play third base and is expected to give the Pioneers a spark offensively as well.

“I have very high expectations for this year’s team,” stated first-year head coach Shannon Fevella. “They are a great group of athletes who have a tremendous amount of talent. Although we are still a very young team that doesn’t have much playing experience as a unit, we are continuing to grow and develop together daily.”

Wesleyan’s season opener against the Lady Tigers will begin at 1:00pm in Cuthbert, Ga.

Three-Point Barrage Overwhelms Wesleyan

A barrage of first half three-pointers overwhelmed Wesleyan College in their 90-56 loss to Piedmont College at Porter Gym on Tuesday night.

The Lady Lions (5-12, 3-2 GSAC) buried their first six three-pointers and built a 22-point advantage halfway through the opening period. By halftime, the Pioneers (4-12, 0-5 GSAC) trailed 51-27 as PC shot nearly 60% from the floor while finishing 7-of-11 from beyond arc in the first 20 minutes.

Jazzmine Favors and Shmyra Hopkins provided some of the few highlights for the Pioneers with each posting career-high point totals. Favors finished with 13 points and Hopkins added 10 points. Bre' Solmone posted her sixth double-double of the season with a game-high 14 points and 12 rebounds. Lisa Jennings led four Lady Lions in double figures with 14 points including a 4-of-5 showing from the three-point line.

Piedmont snapped a 10-game losing streak on the road and finished with 13 three-pointers, matching their own mark for the most in the GSAC this season.

Wesleyan returns to the court on Saturday afternoon at Agnes Scott. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00pm.

LATE SCORING SURGE LIFTS WESLEYAN

Wesleyan College scored seven of the game's final nine points to thwart a late Judson College rally in the Pioneers' 83-79 victory at Porter Gymnasium on Friday night.

Picking up their fourth win of the season, the Pioneers eclipsed the program's win total from the previous four seasons combined.

An entertaining game from the opening tip, the contest featured nine ties and 15 lead changes between the Pioneers (4-11) and the Lady Falcons (0-12). Judson scored the first five points of the game and lead by as many as four points in the second half.

Wesleyan seemed to put the game out of reach late in the second half after Kassandra Epps capped a 13-3 run with a steal and transition lay-up that put the Pioneers ahead 76-67 with less than three-and-a-half minutes to play. However, the Lady Falcons answered by scoring 10 straight points in less than two minutes to regain a 77-76 advantage following Sarah Fowler's third three-pointer of the night. On the next possession, Brandy McDowell buried a clutch three-pointer to hand the lead back to Wesleyan and Erin Williams would nail four straight free throws in the final 25 seconds to seal the victory.

"This is probably one of the first games we have won on free throw shooting," commented second-year Wesleyan head coach Jason Henry. "We showed a lot of heart to pull that game out at the end."

McDowell and Epps each scored a game-high 22 points while Williams finished with 16 points highlighted by a 12-of-14 effort from the line. The Pioneers scored a season-high 83 points despite not denting the scoreboard until three minutes into the game. Simone Paige finished with 19 points to pace five Lady Falcons in double figures.

Wesleyan returns to Great South Athletic Conference action when they host Piedmont College on Tuesday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:00pm and admission is free.

PIONEERS DROP HOMESTAND OPENER TO HUNTINGDON COLLEGE

A strong second half by Wesleyan College proved not enough to overcome the Lady Hawks of Huntingdon College, who downed the Pioneers 74-58 on Wednesday evening.

A slow start to the ball game once again hampered the Pioneers (3-11, 0-4 GSAC), who did not score their first field goal of the game until 12:33 remaining in the first half. By that point, the Lady Hawks (8-7, 4-1GSAC) had built a 15-point lead and ultimately went into the intermission leading 42-21.

Wesleyan outscored Huntingdon 37-32 in the second half, holding the Lady Hawks to just 32% shooting from the floor. The Pioneers were led by Brandi McDowell, who scored all 10 of her points during the second half.

The second half result gives Wesleyan something to build on heading into the final month of the season.

“The second half is the way we should play all the time,” stated Wesleyan Head Coach Jason Henry. “This team seems to just have a tough time getting started. Even though we lost, I still feel like we’ve improved, even since our last game.”

The Hawks were paced by three players in double digits, led by Meagan Jackson who finished the night with 19 points and nine rebounds. Kassie Epps pitched in 12 points to lead the Pioneers.

The Pioneers return to the court on Friday when they take on Judson College at Porter Gymnasium. Tip off is at 7:00pm and admission is free.

LAGRANGE 3-POINT BARRAGE OVERWHELMS WESLEYAN

Impressive three point shooting and quick guard play by LaGrange College proved to be too much for Wesleyan on Thursday evening when they dropped the Great South Athletic Conference match-up, 75-49.

LaGrange jumped out to a quick 16-4 lead just five minutes into the game to put the Pioneers in an early hole that proved too deep to overcome. The Panthers shot a blistering 41% from three point range for the game on 9-of-22 shooting, hitting five in the first half.

“They came out shooting hot from the tip and we could just never dig out from it,” stated Wesleyan Head Coach Jason Henry. “It seemed like every person on their team could shoot the three and that was the difference in the game early.”

The Panthers carried a 41-23 advantage into the intermission and began the second half with another 16-4 run that ended the Pioneers hope of making a come back.

Cameren Farr’s double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds led the Panthers attack. Three other LaGrange players tallied double digits, while Wesleyan was led by Rachel Hornbostel and Kassandra Epps, who scored 11 and 9 points respectively.

The Pioneers return to action Saturday afternoon when they travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on Bennett College. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00pm.

WESLEYAN RALLY COMES UP SHORT VERSUS SPELMAN

Brandy McDowell scored all 14 of her points in the second half as Wesleyan College erased a double-digit lead before the rally ran out of steam in a 65-55 loss to Spelman College at Porter Gymnasium on Monday evening.

The Jaguars put Wesleyan in an early hole by limiting the Pioneers to just 18% shooting from the floor in the first half. Spelman (3-8, 1-2 GSAC) carried a 27-21 advantage into the intermission.

McDowell drilled a three-pointer just over two minutes into the half as Wesleyan (2-8, 0-2 GSAC) scored the first five points of the period to close within one point. However, behind Kristin Kelly, Spelman answered with an 11-0 run and seemed to regain control of the game. The Pioneers had one last surge left in them and tied the game at 48-48 on a Kassandra Epps three-pointer with 5:31 remaining in the contest. The Jaguars buckled down a second time, scoring seven straight points on their way to securing a 65-55 victory.

Wesleyan displayed their defense again, holding Spelman to just over 36% shooting from the floor and forcing 20 turnovers while holding a slim advantage on the boards.

“Our defense kept us in the game and gave us a chance, because when you shoot 25% from the floor, it is tough,” said head coach Jason Henry. “We are happy that we improved more from the last game.”

Epps scored 13 points while Rachel Hornbostel added 11 points to join McDowell in double-figure scoring for the Pioneers. Shanda Kennedy posted a huge double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds to pace Spelman.

The Pioneers begin a three-game road swing at GSAC rival LaGrange College on Thursday night.

WESLEYAN HALFTIME LEAD NOT ENOUGH AGAINST ACC

Wesleyan College held a one-point advantage at the intermission, but Atlanta Christian College scorched the nets in the second half on their way to a 70-58 victory at Porter Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

A back-and-forth start to the first half saw ACC grab an early 12-11 lead after Farrah Lewis made one-of-two free throws. Shmyra Hopkins’ jumper with just under four minutes left in the half capped an 11-1 spurt by the Pioneers. Erica Darden came off the bench to score all seven of her points during the run, which left Wesleyan (2-7) leading 22-13. However, the Chargers scored the final eight points of the first half including six straight by Amanda Lampley to head into the locker room trailing 22-21.

The hot hand followed Atlanta Christian (8-6) out of the break as the Chargers shot 62% from the floor in the second half, highlighted by a 4-of-6 effort from beyond the three-point line. Wesleyan trailed by as many as 14 in the second half but had their chances to close the gap.

“(ACC) is much improved and we played well with them,” commented head coach Jason Henry. “Without those couple of minutes worth of lapses, we would have been right there at the end. If we continue to improve, we’ll be good to go in conference play.”

Despite the hot shooting by ACC, Wesleyan’s defense forced 28 turnovers, and the Pioneers once again out-rebounded their opponent.

“We hit the boards and played tough defense which have become our trademarks,” stated Henry. “Once we start putting it in the basket, we’ll be fine.”

Chauntel Herrod led four Chargers in double figures, filling the box score up to the tune of 16 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals in only 23 minutes. Wesleyan’s Kassandra Epps finished with a double-double of her own with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Brandi McDowell added 13 points and five steals. The Pioneers Bre’ Solmone just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Pioneers return to action Monday night when they host GSAC rival Spelman at Porter Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00pm and admission is free.
