Pioneer Softball Wins Two vs. Spelman, Drops Two vs. Piedmont

In Great South Athletic Conference action over this past week, the Wesleyan College softball team picked up their first conference wins of the season over Spelman College and dropped both games of a doubleheader to Piedmont College.

In last evening's action at Piedmont, Wesleyan was able to generate only six hits by six different batters in the first game, losing to the Lions 7-1. Piedmont's senior pitcher Lindsey Drevlow led the way for the Lions going 1-for-3 from the plate with a double and three RBIs to add to her five strikeouts and one walk over seven innings from the mound.

Although the Pioneers were able to put the ball in play with more consistency in game two, four errors and eight runners left on base proved too much to overcome in their 7-2 loss. Sophomore Belle Thomas (3-for-4 with one run scored) and junior Cheyanne Siebenaler (2-for-2) led Wesleyan from the plate, while DaLin Gillis pitched six innings, surrendering 12 hits and striking out four batters.

In games played last Thursday at Spelman, the Pioneers picked up their first two Great South Athletic Conference wins of the season, downing the Jaguars 15-5 and 12-4. These wins helped move the Pioneers into fifth place in the GSAC standings.

The first game of the day saw the Pioneers pick up their win in quick fashion, scoring 15 runs on 10 hits in only five innings. Sophomore catcher Ashley Jackson had one of her most productive games from the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Belle Thomas and Cheyanne Siebenaler each recorded two hits and an RBI as well. The lone highlight for Spelman's offense was freshman Arianna Crosby, who finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs.

The second victory of the day did not come quite as easily for the Pioneers who were held scoreless until the fourth inning of game two. However, over the final four innings, Wesleyan scored 12 runs on 13 hits to defeat the Jaguars 12-4. Belle Thomas gave the Pioneers the biggest lift of the day, hitting a grand slam home run in the seventh inning to push the game out of reach for the Jaguars.

DaLin Gillis carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before giving up three hits for the game. Her perfomance dropped her ERA to 3.45, which puts her into a tie for third in the Great South Athletic Conference.

Wesleyan returns to the field for another Great South Athletic Conference matchup at LaGrange College on Saturday, April 18. The first pitch of the doubleheader is at 2:00pm.
