The Pioneers of Wesleyan College picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Southern Wesleyan University 3-2 in 10 innings. Wesleyan lost the second game of the doubleheader 4-0.
In the day’s first game, senior pitcher DaLin Gillis carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning for the Pioneers (1-14) before giving up her first hit of the game to freshman pinch hitter Christy Hudson. Hudson’s single allowed the Lady Warriors to score the first run of the game, but Wesleyan would answer at the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Gillis that scored Brittany Jones.
In the tenth inning, Southern Wesleyan (9-15) had runners on second and third with only one out, but the Pioneers defense was able to hold the runners and get out of the inning without allowing the Lady Warriors to score. Southern Wesleyan pitcher Teann Pilgrim began the bottom of the tenth inning with a strikeout, but the Pioneer offense would respond in their very next at bat. Sophomore Belle Thomas singled to right field, which allowed senior Maddie Allsup, who was placed at second base at the beginning of the inning, to score the game’s winning run.
Gillis finished the game with eight strikeouts, while allowing only three hits and walking two.
“I’m extremely proud of our girls for their effort today,” stated Wesleyan Head Coach Shannon Fevella. “DaLin played great giving us the no-hitter through seven innings, and we were able to dig deep and pull out the win.”
In the second game, Southern Wesleyan’s Breanna McMillan scored a run in the second inning to give the Lady Warriors an early lead that they would maintain throughout the game. They would add three more runs during the seventh inning to put the Pioneers away for good. Wesleyan was able to generate only five hits during the game and once again struggled to find their rhythm on offense.
The Pioneers return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 25, when they travel to Piedmont College to begin Great South Athletic Conference action in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00pm.
