CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Wesleyan College got its first look at the 2011 GSAC Championship course while competing in the conference preview meet, finishing seventh overall.
The Pioneers competed without Azea Mustafa and Christina Mayfield, two of their top performers during the first part of the fall campaign. Maria Vazquez stepped up in the pair's absence, posting Wesleyan's only top-40 finish by placing 36th overall in a time of 31:46.96.

Mustafa and Foster Propel Soccer to First Win of Season
Macon, Ga. – Playing down a man for the last 75 minutes of the game, the Wesleyan College soccer team defeated Tennessee Temple University by a score of 1-0 on Thursday night. Senior captains Cheyenne Foster and Azea Mustafa collaborated on the break-away goal scored in the 65th minute.
“I’m beyond excited about this win,” remarked Mustafa, who was credited with the goal on the play. “We had a lot of team unity tonight out on the field even though we were playing down a man.”
Foster picked up the ball near mid-field and carried it about half the distance to the goal before feeding it to Mustafa. Following a quick move to shake off the only Crusader defender in front of her, she chipped it over the goalkeeper’s head into the upper left hand corner.
Putting forth one of their best defensive efforts thus far this season, the Pioneers (1-4) held off a steady Crusader attack for 90 minutes with freshman goalkeeper Abby Stephens recording 19 saves in the match. Despite their good defensive showing, the effort proved costly as sophomore Stephanie Rarick went down with a knee early in the first half, adding to the Pioneers injury woes.
The game was delayed for one hour before the start of the second half due to lightning in the area. Returning to the field, the defensive back line fought hard to help the Pioneers end their 36-game winless streak dating back to the 2008 season.
“I think it’s a little ironic that we win the match where we had to play a man down,” added Foster. “The last time we won, which was during my freshman year, we beat Huntingdon with two players down, so I guess we just really focus in during those times when our backs are against the wall.”

Woodward & Galbraith Lead Offense in Loss to Point
MACON, Ga. - Fourteen Wesleyan College services aces could not overcome Point University's advantage at the net in a 3-0 (18-25, 20-25, 19-25) loss at Porter Gymnasium.
Adrianne Woodward and Francie Galbraith combined to help produce the season's best offensive effort. Woodward's 11 kills were the best by a Pioneer this season while Galbraith's 10 assists and four aces were career-highs. Rebecca Navarre finished with a match-best 15 digs and six aces. Kim Stephens racked up 15 kills while her setter Yolanda Marroquin had a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs.

Raleigh, N.C. - The Wesleyan College soccer team played its most competitive game of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling short to Peace College with a 2-0 loss.
The Pioneers (0-4) got off a season-high eight shots, with sophomore Stephanie Rarick leading the way with five while Azea Mustafa and Verenice Gonzalez also contributed to the offensive attack. Surrendering only 19 shots to the Pacers (1-5), Wesleyan's defense also stepped up its game as freshman goalkeeper Abby Stephens pulled in six more saves.
"The team played solid across the board," stated Wesleyan head coach Michael Spivey. "It came down to two free kicks, and Peace was able to score on both of those which was the difference in the game. We had a number of shots on offense and played really good defense but came up a little short."
On Sunday, Wesleyan squared off with Meredith College (3-3-2), falling by a score of 6-0. The quick turn-around was not kind to the weary Pioneers, who have been battling injury and fatigue.
The Avenging Angels put up a smothering defense that did not allow Wesleyan to formulate any kind of offensive attack, while keeping Stephens on her toes for most of the day. The goalkeeper came away with 18 saves, as Meredith was able to put up 24 shots on goal.

Wesleyan Falls in Home Opener at the MAC

Soccer Performs Community Service at United in Pink
On Saturday, September 10, the Wesleyan College soccer team spent the morning volunteering with United in Pink, a non-profit organization supporting families affected by breat cancer.
Team members spent their time working at the organization's office, performing tasks such as cleaning and organizing, writing thank you notes and wrapping prizes.
"Our team really embraces many causes, but not many effect so many women and their families as Breast Cancer," remarks head coach Michael Spivey. "We were glad to be able to give back and learn about early detection of breast cancer thanks to United in Pink."

Americus, Ga. - The Wesleyan College cross country team competed in the GSW Remembrance Run hosted by Georgia Southwestern State University on Saturday morning. The only Division III college competing in the event, the Pioneers raced against some of the state's top teams including Columbus State, Clayton State, Valdosta State and Mercer University.
Freshman Christina Mayfield once again completed the course as the Pioneer's top finisher (47th-24:15), while Maria Vasquez (55th - 25:17) improved her time by nearly 45 seconds to be Wesleyan's second place finisher. Rounding out Wesleyan's scoring competitors were Kaitlyn Rentz (57th - 25:48), Turhonda Williams (58th - 26:03) and Azea Mustafa (59th - 26:11).
"We competed against some really good teams today, which made the girls really push themselves through the course," remarked head coach Melissa Bush. "Most of them improved their times, which is obviously what we are looking for, and they worked hard. I'm proud of their effort and left the meet feeling really good about where we are right now."

The match was notable for both programs as the 21 aces are the most in a match for the Pioneers since re-instituting the sport three years ago and the Bears claimed the first win in school history.
Gabriela Silber notched a current era record seven aces for Wesleyan (0-2) while Alaina Avera added six of her own. Francie Galbraith narrowly missed a double-double finishing with 11 digs and nine assists. Liz Norton piled up 16 kills to go with four solo blocks for the Bears (1-2).
Wesleyan faces middle Georgia rival Fort Valley State on Monday. First serve is scheduled for 7:00pm.

Defending NCCAA National Champs Best Wesleyan

Wesleyan (0-1) improved their offensive production each set and committed just one attack error in the third set. Newcomer La'Joi Battle tallied four kills and a pair of solo blocks in her collegiate debut while veteran Alaina Avera added three more kills.

Six Freshmen Make Collegiate Debut for Soccer
WEST POINT, Ga. - Six Wesleyan College soccer players made their collegiate debut in the Pioneers' 7-0 loss at Point University.
The Skyhawks (2-1-0) were formerly known as the Atlanta Christian College Chargers, a rival in a variety of sports for Wesleyan (0-1-0).
Freshman goalkeeper Abby Stephens stepped into a big pair of shoes replacing NCAA record-setter Emily Epperson and made a mark of her own, recording 11 saves while facing 45 shots.
"This was the first match for us to really use our formations and approach against an opponent," said third-year head coach Michael Spivey. "We put people in new positions and I think the way that the players grasped our concepts is encouraging for the rest of the year."
Wesleyan returns to action on Tuesday when they host Judson College in the home opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00pm at the Mathews Athletic Complex.

Wesleyan Cross Country Posts Encouraging Marks in Season Opener
ALBANY, Ga. – Seven Wesleyan cross country runners posted top-20 finishes in the team’s season opener at the Darton College Invitational.
Team captain Aditi Dey (17th – 28:24.00) joined Rentz in establishing personal records in their 2011 debut. Sable Phillips (18th – 28:36.00), LindaMarie Tonn (21st – 30:41.00) and Christin Daniels (23rd – 34:08.00) rounded out the Wesleyan competitors. As a team, the Pioneers placed third.
Freshman Christina Mayfield completed the 5000-meter course in 24:06 to place 11th overall, which marked the top finish by a Pioneer. Kaitlyn Rentz (13th – 25:49.00), Maria Vasques (14th – 26:01.00) and Azea Mustafa (15th – 26:58.00) each finished in the top-15.
"I'm really proud of our performance today," remarked Wesleyan head coach Melissa Bush. "We are starting this season with the times that we ended last season with, which is really exciting to see."
Wesleyan returns to action next week at the GSW Remembrance Run in Americus, Ga.
