Defensive Improvements Show in Soccer Loss to Salem
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Although they lost to Great South Athletic Conference opponent Salem College 5-0, the Wesleyan College soccer team brought a much improved defensive effort to the pitch Saturday afternoon.
Goalkeeper Abby Stephens hauled in another 18 saves against the Spirits, moving her total for the season to 117.
"Abby had a fantastic game, making some very athletic and important saves for us," remarks head coach Michael Spivey.
The Pioneer defense held Salem scoreless through the first 44 minutes of play before surrendering a goal just before halftime.
"Our team defense was great today," adds Spivey. "I'm ecstatic over our performance and think this was our defense's best game of the season."
The Pioneers return to action on Monday when they kick off a four-game homestand against Maryville College at 4:00pm.
